Vacancies For Nurses

The demand for nurses has grown to such staggering heights that many hospitals, doctors offices, and nursing homes have so many vacancies for nurses that they cannot keep up.

Especially in certain areas of the Gulf Coast states where many people were uprooted and had to relocate to other areas of the country there is an extreme shortage of nurses.

Sources of Job Openings:

* Newspaper help wanted advertisements are full of opportunities for all types of nurses for all different shifts. Employment agencies have listings from employers looking for applicants. A lot of hospitals have a personnel department that lists openings as they become available. The unemployment agency in your city usually has openings listed on bulletin boards for people looking for work.

Types of Job Openings:

* The need for part time, full time, and rotating shift slots for nurses is at an all time high. One of the benefits of having a nursing degree is that you make enough money to work part time if that is what you prefer. Some nurses work only weekends and many work 4 days on and 3 days off. Their personal preference and whether they have a degree in general nursing or have specialized training gives them the opportunity to pick and choose their hours and days. Doctor's offices normally hire full time Monday through Friday and sometimes half a day on Saturday.

Qualifications for Nursing Opportunities:

* The hospital or doctor's office seeking to fill vacancies for nurses will look for someone who has the correct qualifications for the job they want to fill. If it is a specialized field of nursing the applicant should have training in that field. They will be interested in what schools the nurse attended and past jobs they have held. As with most employers, they will question long periods of unemployment in the nurse's past employment history. Another plus is if the nurse has kept up to date on new procedures.

Keeping Employment History Acceptable:

* When an employer has vacancies for nurses, he wants to choose someone dependable. An applicant who is known for leaving employment without giving a notice is a risk. The duties and demands of nurses are constant. It is not like a typical job where someone can be easily replaced. When nurses decide to quit a job they leave patients that have to be taken care of. The typical notice is two weeks however a longer notice may be required depending on the situation.

Pros and Cons of the Different Positions:

* As with any position nursing can have good points and bad points. Long hours may be required if a nurse specializes in emergency room care. If you are an on call nurse you may be called in at anytime. It can be at 3 a.m. or in the middle of dinner. The benefits of being a nurse are many, such as the pay is quite good, the number of openings make it possible for you to choose where and how much you want to work, the results of seeing the difference your expertise can make is immeasurable.

Nursing Contracts:

* Typically nursing contracts are for a year and sometimes two with the option of renewing. Some traveling nurses have a standard contract of thirteen weeks. The options have changed so much over the years that depending on the situation contracts can be for just about any amount of time.

When you become a nurse, whether you opt for specialized training or general nursing, the reasons behind the choice are what counts the most. If you enjoy taking care of people and want to make a difference, there are plenty of vacancies for nurses all across the country.
